Town of Luray 45 East Main Street P. 0. Box 629 Luray, Virginia 22835 PRESS RELEASE On November 13, 2017 at a Regular Meeting, the Luray Town Council took the following action: The Council heard a request from Lowell Baughan representing the local Train Club to use the former dining room of the Brown's Restaurant for a train display that would be open to the public. After discussions on required modifications, overall costs, and liability for the Town, the Council instructed staff to work with the Club to try to estimate costs and timetables in an effort to facilitate this request, if possible. Primary concerns were Town costs, and potentially, a very short window of use by the Club. The Council heard a briefing from Chief of Police Cook regarding drug interdiction efforts and statistics in Luray. Council recommended that the Chief pursue other options for controlling the manufacture, distribution/sale, and use of drugs in Luray. Such efforts could include additional officer training, and researching the addition of a drug canine to the LPD force. Such tools would be used to combat the ongoing efforts against drugs in Luray. Drug interdiction efforts, such as a community-sponsored canine, would be a force-multiplier for the Luray Police Department. The Council voiced its consent to move forward with a proposal for Interim Financing for the West Main Street Bridge Project. This new note (Note #4) with Blue Ridge Bank would provide interim funding during the design and construction phases of the project. The Town will advertise and hold a Public Hearing on this financing proposal at its December 11, 2017 regular Council meeting. Within the Action Items section of the agenda, the Council: 1) Adopted a Resolution supporting Revenue Sharing funding with VDOT for the Memorial Drive Corridor Improvements 2) Adopted a Resolution in conjunction with a revised Transportation Plan for Luray-2017 3) Adopted an updated Nuisance Ordinance 4) Adopted a revised Tall Grass Ordinance After the Closed Session, Council reconvened in Open Session and voted to have the Bridge Project Management Team pursue a Notice of Intent to Award to the lowest, responsive bidder. This was Orders Construction, based in Wytheville, VA, with a total base bid of $3,856,020. Council elected to not pursue Bid Additive #1 (the temporary pedestrian bridge) since the cost was nearly $220,000.
